Roy graduated from Ithaca High School in 1963, having participated with the high school swim and golf teams from 1960 to 1963. He graduated from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill with a BS in education in 1967. Roy swam for four years at UNC. Roy coached men's swimming at IHS from 1968 through 1976, coached at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse from 1980 to 1985, and returned to the Ithaca High School men's team in 1986, coaching that team until 2004. He has coached the women's swim team at the high school since 1988. Roy formed and coached the Ithaca Aquatics Club in the summer of 1968 and continues as head coach of the team.
